Minnie

Minnie
Adkins and Tess Little
Minnie Adkins
(b. 1934) and her husband Garlan (1928-1997) are perhaps the best
known Kentucky folk artists. Minnie grew up in the mountains of
eastern Kentucky, then moved to Ohio after marrying Garland in
1952. She worked in a factory there until the mid-seventies when
they moved back to eastern Kentucky. It was then that Minnie began
to carve. As she gained recognition, Garland joined her and would
rough out the sculptures with power tools, leaving them for her
to do the finish carving and painting. Her themes include animals
native to her home state
red foxes, bears, possums, roosters,
as well as biblical themes. Minnie's art has extended well beyond
wood sculpture to include paintings and, recently, collaboration
on ceramic platters with her clay artist-cousin, Tess Little.
Her work is in
the Folk Art Collection of Morehead State University and is featured
in the book O' Appalachia and she is the recipient of many national
and regional folk art awards.
